SAFETY INTEL
Smith Court is residential — arrive early or midday, move quietly, and don't block the doorways; the history there is still someone's home. Park Street station is your Red and Green Line transfer, and the platforms compress fast at rush hour — come up the Tremont Street side if you're heading to the Common, fewer stairs and you land at the trail head. The Beacon Street memorial at the top of the Common needs space to be read properly, so give yourself room to stand with it rather than getting pushed against the curb by tour traffic.
COMMUNITY INTEL
Nubian Square — renamed from Dudley Square in 2019 as a direct act of resistance against gentrification and displacement — is the primary commercial and cultural center of Black Boston, anchored by Frugal Bookstore, Boston's only Black-owned bookstore, along with Suya Joint and the historic Bolling Building. Mattapan is Boston's Little Haiti, a home base for the Haitian diaspora. The Museum of African American History is a community anchor here, and Jamaica Plain has a strong community that looks out for its own.
